Garmin iQue 3600 PDA/GPS Handheld System with Americas Detailed Street MappingGarmin iQue 3600 PDA/GPS Handheld System with Americas Detailed Street Mapping $369

I installed the software per the user's guide and used it on the first day I got it. My wife was driving and I was reading about it in the car. I had the GPS on and was amazed at how the map moved (Track up mode) as we moved. It was accurate re: driving speed, location, odometer, etc. Then I tried the Que Route mode and tried reaching a destination. The thing kept saying "Off Route, recalculating" over, and over, and over again. I was pissed! Then I read some reviews and learned that I had to go to the Garmin website to download "release 2" and "release 2 patch 1."

After following the detailed instructions and re-trying the Que route, the navigation was perfect. No problems whatsoever. The unit is occasionally inaccurate as to street addresses, and is better with known intersections (gets you there within 10 feet accuracy). Some street addresses were right on the money, but others were a few houses off. Overall, however, it's a tremendous tool and a very fun toy.

Definitely get the 256 MB expansion card at a minimum and you absolutely need the Auto-Nav travel kit.

Wayfinder V7500 Compass Plus III $100

Digital compasses use a patented magnetic sensor technology that was developed by PNI Corporation for the US Military. This technology is called Magneto-Inductive and is the greatest advance in compass technology since the fluxgate was invented 60 years ago.

Magneto-Inductive technology electronically senses the difference in the earth's field from your vehicle's magnetic field, then an on-board microprocessor electronically subtracts out your vehicle's magnetic field, displaying highly accurate compass readings.

Magneto-Inductive sensor technology has many advantages over other technologies, including enhanced performance, less power consumption and lower cost. These advantages have made Wayfinder Magneto-Inductive sensor technology the choice for many high-profile compass applications including GM, Ford, and Chrysler automobiles, Bayliner boats, Timex watches and Samsung cell phones.

Suunto Observer SR Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass (Black) $299

The Suunto Observer SR Watch with Chronograph and Timer is packed with features that will satisfy even the most demanding user. Extremely shock-resistant, the Observer SR is a perfect tool for even the toughest athletic challenges.

For backcountry and skiing enthusiasts, the Observer SR is loaded with features that will help to keep you safe in the most demanding of situations. The watch's altimeter has a range up to 9,000 meters (29,500 feet), with a one-meter resolution. It features an altitude alarm as well as memory function that allows you to record total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, as well as the number of hikes or runs that you've skied. The logbook data is quickly available during the activity with the touch of a button.

The barometric functions provide you with valuable information for forecasting weather changes. Information on the present sea level pressure helps you read and understand the barometric pressure at high altitudes. The compass shows the cardinal or half-cardinal point abbreviated and indicates north with an arrow. It can be set to track a certain bearing, and graphically show the difference between it and the actual bearing. This is a valuable tool when trying to get back on track after minor or major detours in the terrain.

The declination adjustment function allows the user to correct the difference between true north and magnetic north. These features all combine to provide you with vital information that will help you make safe and responsible decisions during your excursions.

The watch also functions as an everyday time piece, suitable for any casual situation. It includes an easy-to-read display with an extra-wide viewing angle, an electro-luminescent backlight and a user-replaceable battery. With a calendar clock pre-programmed to the year 2089, three daily alarms, a dual time display, and a stopwatch with lap and split time measurement, the Observer SR is the only watch you'll ever need. Suunto Vector Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, Compass, and Thermometer (Black) $166

I've owned the Suunto Vector for more than three years after clicking the pic above and purchasing it when I first became interested in adventure racing. While many top racers wear it, I would highly recommend it for the serious hiker, climber or backcountry skier for it's solid construction, design and versatility.

While I also wear this as my everyday watch, it's extra large size should be taken into consideration if that's something you have in mind.

There are a couple other brands available in this market segment, but the relatively low price and exceptional feature set are what continues to set this tool apart from the crowd.

Here's what you should know:

* Expect to replace the battery at least once a year. This is due to a number of reasons, one of which is the powerful backlight on the face that when activated can nearly illuminate the inside of a small tent at night. If you believe the manufacturer's warnings and want to play it safe, you may want to have this procedure performed by a professional (watch, not outdoor) shop. Suunto sells a battery pack that comes with a replacement seal and screw-in back, and this is definitely something to consider every other replacement opportunity, but you can get by with a lower-cost Duracell type 2430 3V lithium if you're on a budget.

* The altimeter is one of the strongest features, allowing you to quickly pinpoint your location on a topo map. However, plan to reset it regularly, especially after a plane ride or frequent and significant changes in altitude, or weather. This is rather easy as long as you have a confirmed location metric, but you have to remember to do it regularly to ensure the greatest accuracy. The 24-hour memory provides a total measurement of your ups and downs (ascents and descents) over that time period, a really cool record for runners, mountain bikers and skiers.

* The compass is one of the strongest in this class of devices, which to be sure isn't the greatest to begin with ... but even the serious orienteerer would be impressed. The ability to adjust for local declination is really nice.

* The barometer is good, but not great. However, if you want to be aware of potential weather changes, this will provide you with some peace of mind. Better to be safe than sorry (or worse) in this regard.

* The thermometer isn't accurate at all unless you take the watch off for 15-20 minutes or so to eliminate the warming effect of your skin/body temperature.

* Some of the controls and settings are not easy to comprehend or remember. I've never been able to figure out how to use the stopwatch, timer and lap features. If you're a swimmer or triathlete and this is important to you, look to the Timex Ironman standby.

* Waterproofing is rock solid. No worries.

* The soft-rubber watchband is comfortable to wear, but will deteriorate over time, even more rapidly in chlorine. Suunto offers a much lighter nylon/velcro alternative that I personally prefer.

Overall, I really like the Vector. But for a number of reasons already mentioned, would not feel comfortable giving it a perfect 5.0 score. But consider my 4.0 more like a 4.7 ... you can't go wrong here.

Gps, Ifinder Explorer $174

Lowrance is the most consumer oriented GPS on the market. I clicked the pic above and bought the iFinder when they first came out quite a few years ago. After nearly ten years of perfect service, my old unit started to show its age - being bounced around in suitcases, dropped, scratched, and generally abused, it was time to replace it. Lowrance provides free firmware updates for this unit, which let me take advantage of the latest features and tweaks.

The new iFinder has all the buttons in the same places and operates identically to my old unit, so I didn't need to read the manual again. They've added a few improvements. The buttons are easier to press, it's faster, it locks onto position better - in fact, once I had a lock it continued to operate indoors without losing its position.

In addition to the MMC card, it now takes SD cards as well - and, up to 1gig in size. The backlight on this unit is brighter and the battery cover is more secure than the old unit. The memory cards are easier to swap in and out. They even threw in a DC power cord for the car because it does run through batteries - also customizable, you can conserve battery power but dropping the sample rate.

What sets Lowrance apart from others is that there aren't any gotcha's. My original unit was bundled with MapCreate which allowed me to add map details - almost obsolete now, since I'm no longer trying to squeeze everything to fit on a tiny 64meg card. All my old routes, points, and map details were read without the need for software upgrades. I just dropped in my old memory card, loaded my files, and I was running. Even sweeter is the new firmware which can find a street address or display addresses along a long stretch of road. They made little tweaks, like the street pop-up name is anchored to the lower right corner instead of where it used to be - blocking the road detail right under the cursor.

And, the MMC card reader which comes with add-on MapCreate package can read any MMC card, such as my PDA's storage card. This was one of the best purchases I've made since I purchased my old iFinder - and, if you have an old unit you'll love the faster navigation and little enhancements they've made.

Suunto X6HRM Heart Rate Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, and Compass (Stainless Steel) $400

The stainless steel Suunto X6HRM wrist-top computer/timepiece provides you with tools for analyzing and improving your performance in your favorite endurance sport. It combines a heart rate monitor and an altimeter that comes with the included Suunto transmitter belt. It also features a barometer, digital compass, chronometer, and clinometer (for measuring slope angle).

A combined altimeter and heart rate monitor is a practical tool for all outdoor and endurance sports activities, helping you find the ideal training level or the most suitable hiking pace and understand the impact of altitude and topographic factors on heart rate. The chronometer records altitude and heart rate profiles at 2-, 10-, or 60-second intervals and has virtually an unlimited capacity for split/lap times. It also offers an interval timer for circuit training and repetitions.

You can transfer and store the logs you have recorded with your Suunto X6HRM to your PC. The logs can be either Hiking logs stored in the Suunto X6HRM logbook files, weather logs stored in the weather memory, or Chrono logs stored in the chrono memory. When the data has been transferred, you can organize, view and add related information to it, and create charts with the Suunto Activity Manager software.

The Suunto X6HRM comes packed with solutions enabling safe and responsible hiking. You can use the alarm functions to alert you at certain altitudes, help maintain safe climbing speed on the mountains, or indicate an upcoming storm. You will be much better off using the compass and altimeter if caught in bad weather. The compass also guides you back when running in an unknown place or just strolling around in a foreign city.

The Suunto X6HRM is water resistant, tested to 100 meters/330 feet according to ISO 2281 standard, which means you can use it for swimming or other water sports activities--but it should not be used for scuba diving or free diving.

The Logbook feature allows you to save information regarding, for example, a hiking trip. When you start the logbook, it starts gathering information about the cumulative ascents and descents, average ascent and descent rates, highest and lowest points and specific marks you can set during the trip. When you stop the logbook, the information gathered thus far is recorded as a logbook file that can be viewed later. The maximum duration of one logbook is 168 hours (one week). The Suunto X6HRM can store 20 logbook files at one time.

The Suunto Activity Manager (SAM) is software that enables deeper understanding and better graphical representation of the data recorded and stored by Suunto X6HRM. With SAM you can visualize the altitude and heart rate profiles for your routes, analyze and plan your training, and keep a training diary. You can also create your own activity reports by adding photos and text to the profiles.

Garmin Rino 120 GPS Integrated FRS / GMRS Radio with 8 MB of Internal MemoryGarmin Rino 120 GPS Integrated FRS / GMRS Radio with 8 MB of Internal Memory $200

Garmin Rino 120 is the new GPS/Walkie-Talkie that my group clicked the pic above and picked up for out last kayaking outing. I already own Garmin Legend but I figured that I can sell it and for extra money have a reliable communication and navigation tool in one.

Well using it all weekend proved that it was worth the money. It has the standard features of the radio and GPS unit so you already know what to expect out of the box but there are some extra functions that are unique for Rino. I love the trip odometer feature which allows me to time my progress, adjust speed and control break point.

With the buddy to buddy reference positioning system I can do sweeps on the river and keep my group spread out without fear of losing anyone. Also it's easier to manage food and camp if you know how far people are away from you and what their ETA is. Obviously I wasn't able to hit every possible feature but from what I got to use I already established the possible pros and cons of the unit.

Pros:
-GPS with WAAS build in. Very accurate.
-Unit is small and waterproof (ok no diving).
-Built in very loud alarm clock
-Built in games will kill some boredom (kills battery)
-When talking to your buddy your unit automatically sends your position out so he knows where you are (you can shut it off).
-Strong clip
-Easy to access even in the kayak
-Walkie-talkie has nice scrambler and coding device.

Cons:
-When using GPS (WAAS on) and Walkie-Talkie batteries drain fast
-Window needs screen protector because it scratches too easily
-Unit doesn't feel that solid as big priced Motorola radios (goes for all Garmin units)
-Like with all GPS units (or at least the one I worked with) you need open (partially open or steady position) sky for clear accurate signal
-Radios even if functional will only have 2 mile radius. Enough for camping and woods but not enough for any other land movement tactics cooperation SAR.
-Screen size was reduced. It still looks ok but I got used to bigger screen from my previous unit so I'm still adjusting.
-Cool white backlight that was a trademark on most of the Garmin units was substituted by a green glow one. Is it a problem? No, but I think I was able to see a bit clearer with the white light.

At the end it's a nice tool to have. GPS, radio, alarm clock and games all packed into one nifty unit.

Suunto MC-2G Global Compass $67

Hailing from Suunto's MC series, the top-of-the-line MC-2G global compass is an invaluable tool for people who require highly accurate and reliable directional measurements, such as surveyors, miners, architects, rescue patrols, hikers, boaters, and the military. The MC-2G boasts a fixed declination adjustment system--standard throughout the range--that's especially useful when working in areas with large magnetic variation.

The tool's additional sighting hole, meanwhile, ensures superior accuracy, as does the jewel bearing. Add in a mirrored lid, a baseplate with a round magnifying lens, a clinometer that measures the ground slope, and a luminous bezel and markings and you have a versatile, practical compass for a variety of applications.

The real star of the MC-2G, however, is its global needle, which works anywhere on the planet. Previously, most compasses functioned well in only one of five geographic zones. That's because the compasses were balanced differently based on the zone's inclination, i.e., the vertical intensity and direction of the Earth's magnetic field. However, as people began to travel more, it became clear that globe-hoppers needed compasses with a greater geographical range. Suunto responded by developing two-zone systems--which work in either the northern or southern hemisphere--and one-zone systems such as the global MC-2G. Now there's no need to purchase several compasses before embarking on your around-the-world eco adventure.

The MC-2G, which also sports a red nylon lanyard for around-the-neck use, measures 2.5 by 0.6 by 3.9 inches (W x H x D) with the lid closed and weighs a mere 2.65 ounces. It's also backed by a lifetime warranty.

Suunto S-Lander Wrist $199

The Suunto S-Lander Watch features excellent altimeter, barometer and chronograph features in a stylish, non-allergenic aluminum casing with a water-resistant fabric strap. This watch is ideal for those who want their timepiece to do much more than simply tell the time.

The Suunto S-Lander is a great option for the backcountry or skiing enthusiast. It combines an altimeter, barometer, watch and stopwatch, and provides you with information on real-time altitude, the number of runs skied, and the current barometric pressure and temperature.

It also features an altitude difference measurement function for following vertical progress between stages. The logbook keeps a record of the total and cumulative vertical ascents and descents, as well as the number of runs. Barometric pressure and temperature data are automatically stored for the past four days. In addition to common chronograph functions, the Suunto S-Lander also includes a calendar, alarm functions, dual time and an electro-luminescent backlight for dimly lit conditions.

The one-button fast access to view the number of runs during the day maximizes the user friendliness of the Suunto S-Lander. In short, if hiking, skiing or snowboarding is your thing, you'd do well to take a serious look at the Suunto S-Lander.

Suunto Observer ST Wrist-Top Computer Watch with Altimeter, Barometer, and Compass (Stainless Steel) $450

Truly a 'niche' product, the Suunto Observer defies classification. It's a sport watch, make no mistake, but Casio's line (particularly the 'G-Shocks') offer more for the money and MUCH increased battery life. It's several 'instruments' rolled into one, offering barometer, altimeter, compass and thermometer, but in a watch case, and, surprisingly, blending them into an attractive package.

If you're considering this 'wrist computer' (Suunto's term and fairly appropriate) for a 'techno' toy though, save your money. Typical of Suunto's products, it has stellar thinking behind it. Typical also it is cutting edge. However, also typical of products built and produced in Finland, it has an owner's manual that has to be about a 5 to 10 on the readability scale of a 100. Like all Scandinavian products, there is a concerted effort here to use icons whenever possible and it's like you walked into a Russian made helicopter; there may be icons, but you're still going to have to have someone explain it to you! But, like Suunto's diving gauges, one you cross the divide and spend some quality time with the manual, user reviews, internet postings and about 6 to 10 hours playing with it, you WILL have a grin on your face. It's an outstanding piece of technology, but only once you finally understand it.

A few points that may help you:

--I bought the stainless model (there is also a full rubber strap model and a titanium model). Realize it IS NOT a full stainless strap; it's a rubber strap with about 10 pieces of stainless for looks only. However, unlike some reviews posted, I truly LIKE the look and don't feel Suunto was cheesing out by just using stainless 'pieces' instead of a full stainless strap. It fits like a glove, once adjusted. It took me about 30 minutes to fit it perfectly.

--Other reviews give a hit or miss coverage of the DUAL opening latch on the strap. It does have 2 openings, the second is to give additional access if you have large hands/small wrists. One review stated, incorrectly, that the second latch undermines the first latches ability to hold it together tightly. If they would have examined the second latch in more detail, they would see that the primary latch COVERS the second with a gate, preventing it from opening. IN NO WAY does the second latch make this strap less strong. Typical Suunto, well engineered, but poorly documented.

--I've compared the barometer and altimeter to dedicated systems I have and they're very, very close. The compass matches a Brunton transit within a few degrees. Take the time to learn how to use them and they're very handy and very accurate.

--The battery life on the Casio's is far superior to the Suunto. That IS an accurate statement. The Suunto has an EASILY replaced battery that doesn't require the back of the watch to come off (Casio's DO require the back to be removed). So it's a toss up. I find on my Casio that with regular backlight use, they get eaten up pretty quickly too. Realize, Casio only rates their batteries at ONE use of the backlight per day, and who only uses a backlight once a day? On their top rated G-Shock (which I also own) the battery life drops 2 YEARS when you use the backlight just twice a day. I'll take Suunto's approach any day; just use a dime to remove a separate cover for the battery and you're back in business.

--The Suunto has one thing no Casio has--it's stylish. Very European/high tech looking and built like a tank too. Make no mistake, I'll still wear my Casio if I'm diving, because I don't want to scratch the Suunto (kind of crazy isn't it? I'm not concerned about my Suunto dive gauges, lol).
So I'm giving the Suunto four stars; was considering three for the STEEP learning curve, but after I finally 'got it' I was grinning like a Cheshire cat. It is really a fun instrument to play with and truly does offer features in a unique package.

Highly recommended, but don't click the pic above and buy it if you aren't willing to spend the time learning its nuances. One last note and one that helped me the most. I was frustrated with Suunto's labels of the buttons and finally adopted Casio's system that I kludged together. This watch has 4 buttons. De-program yourself from thinking of them in Suunto's terms. Use Casio's EXCELLENT system of calling the buttons A, B, C and D. Just make a little cheat sheet that corresponds to A, B, C and D. A is top left, B is top right, C is bottom left and D is bottom right. Once you convert Suunto's system to Casio's, it is SO much easier! Hope this helps someone!

Polar AXN300 Altimeter Watch (Black) $200

Whether you are competing against others, pushing your own limits, or fighting the elements, the Polar AXN300 altimeter/wrist heart rate monitor will help you keep track of your skiing runs and keep your training goals in sight. The Slope Counter feature automatically records the number of slopes you cover (a course of at least 50m /165ft descended continuously is registered as a slope). Check your pace down the mountain or up the rock with the Vertical speed feature, and the barometer allows you to track the changing weather.

This wristwatch-like monitor features a large display that includes 12/24-hour time of day, three daily alarms, and stopwatch. Heart rate tracking includes continuous heart rate with graphical trend, average/maximum rate, and one set of target zones with visual and audible alarms. The AXN300 records up to 80 exercise files with summaries. Altimeter features include altitude with graphical trend (ascent and descent), vertical speed, and cumulative ascent and descent.

The Polar OwnCal feature shows your energy expenditure during one exercise session as well as your accumulated kilocalories during several exercise sessions. You can set daily and weekly exercise goals in terms of calorie expenditure with the OwnCal feature. Because the OwnCal tracks both the energy expenditure during one exercise session and the accumulated kilocalories during a longer time e.g. one week, it helps in achieving both short term and long term goals.

Other features include backlight for easy reading in low-light conditions, user replaceable battery, and water resistance up to 100 meters (330 feet).
