Roll-a-Rounds Drop & Roar Dinosaur $32

We couldn't wait to take this beast out of it's box! This dinosaur is a lot of fun. My 8 month old doesn't quite understand the point or the cause and effect, yet. Nonetheless, she still likes the lights and sounds.

This toy does come in pieces. It took my 6 and 7 year old daughters less than ten minutes to put it together. Note that it requires 3 AA batteries for sound and lights. It is still fun without the effects.

Let me clarify the pendulum, for anyone trying to figure out the photo in the ad. When a roll-a-round is put into the orange hole, the ball goes down a ramp, pushing this pendulum-shaped piece out of its way so it can exit the dinosaur's stomach. There is no cover over this part, so nothing can get clogged up by a an oddly shaped toy of your child's choosing. Roll-a-Rounds Drop & Roar Dinosaur is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

This is what I don't like:

1- This is made with, what is becoming, typical Fisher-Price quality. When my older children were this age, everything seemed more solid, with a heavier-duty plastic. There is one place on the back of our dinosaur where the plastic was not even cut in a straight line, and looked a little jagged. It does appear safe, however.

2- The last 2 baby items we purchased from Fisher-Price looked, as this one does, dirty and used. There are a few small places where the toy looked like it was dragged across a rough surface.

All in all, this is a great toy. The sound effects are entertaining, but not annoying with 2 volume levels (loud and louder) and an off switch, which also turns off the lights. The "Roar" is not loud or scary. It comes with 4 roll-a-rounds with dino babies in them (one is an egg that opens and shuts).

I recommend this toy to babies 9-18 months.

Leapfrog LeapStart Learning Table $29

I just recently clicked the pic above and splurged on this for my 8 month old son. He is just learning to stand up on his own and is constantly trying to pull things off tables or bother our poor dog. I quickly realized that an activity table might keep those busy hands busy.

I agonized over the purchase, for it was going to be the first big toy I bought for our small house. I looked at the Microsoft Intelli-table, but it looked a little Atari-ish with it's flashing lights in the middle. I looked at the Fisher Price models with the blocks (which were cheaper), but I figured that Legos would be the block of choice soon enough. Leapfrog LeapStart Learning Table is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

I was sold on the LeapStart b/c of the musical theme. It has a banjo that plays bluegrass, a compartment that scats when you open it, it has shapes that play the drums, a bass that plays the bass, etc. But here is the best part, it is all real music, not some electronic rendition of good music, the real stuff. For parents, it is a godsend, b/c it is not offensive to listen to over and over again (but it does have volume control for those times when you need it).

My child was actually squealing with delight when I gave it to him. It is now his favorite thing to play with, and he has finally found something more interesting than crawling after our old dog. I would have paid much more for this toy.

LeapFrog Interactive Learn & Groove Musical Table $40

My mom clicked the pic above and bought this table and I bought a Fisher Price table. The kids love the Leap Frog Table and hate the Fisher Price one.

The Leap Frog one is awesome! It has two options, words or music. LeapFrog Interactive Learn & Groove Musical Table is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

So for the little ones to whom words don't mean much, you can use the music reinforcement and my toddler (age 2) likes the word option now. Great for around age 8 months when they start pulling up to stand.

Love Love Love this table.

Tiny Love Gymini Super Deluxe - Lights & Music $55

We didn't get this toy right away and weren't sure how much our son would like it, but we clicked the pic above and  picked it up when he was about four weeks old and I am so glad we did.

At first he was mostly interested in the mirror (which is a tiny bit warped, by the way, but not too bad at all), although the toys are close enough that he could see them and would spend some time looking at them too. Now he is almost three months old and he still loves the mirror, but also spends lots of time smiling and batting at the toys. He can happily spend about half an hour in there. If he does get bored, I move him to another spot to change the view and he's usually happy again.

We also detach the toys and take them with us in the car, stroller, etc. He particularly likes the monkey (which has a big smile) and smiles back at it when he sees it. The elephant has a sparkly tummy that he also stares at for a long time. Tiny Love Gymini Lights & Music is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Some things we didn't know when we bought it:
1. Each of the toys has something different that is interesting about it. The monkey and the giraffe are both rattles, while the elephant is one of those pull toys that shake. The parrot has crinkly wings.
2. The mat washes well but has faded a bit after only a few washings (we put it in the dryer on low). This is my major disappointment with the toy - for the price it should hold up a bit better. The toys have to be washed with a damp cloth.
3. The whole thing collapses down quite flat. We took it with us on a plane trip and it fit nicely in the bottom of a suitcase.
4. The music is quite tinny, but not bad for a toy. It does get old after a while (there are only two settings), so we usually put on our own cd when we want music.
5. The mat is nice and soft (good if you have have hard floors) and has some interesting textures: the giraffe's tail, the zebra's mane, etc.

All in all, we are quite pleased with this toy. My son seems to find it entertaining, and he hasn't even begun to use all of its features. I think we'll get a lot of use out of it in the months to come. Hope that helps!

Little Playzone with Sounds and Lights $100

Perks:

1) Looks kid-friendly. Neat and colorful. It is oodles better than my first playpen purchase, a bizarre contraption we later discovered is also marketed separately as a dog enclosure!
2) Has a locking gate.
3) Is pretty stable on hard floors when placed on 2'x2' interlocking foam playmats (purchase separately).
4) Has suction cups for hard floors (I haven't used them).
5) Each wall piece is light weight and easily assembles and disassembles.
6) The play wall comes with batteries already installed. Thank you.
7) The bear stickers other reviewers have complained about were not included in my kit (spring 2005). I won't miss them.
8) Little Playzone is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Drawbacks:

1) The Playzone is small. I found it less expensive to buy two and combine them, rather than pay for shipping on several extension kits.
2) The battery-operated music is loud and there is no volume control. I taped cardboard over the speaker (located on the exterior wall) to muffle the sound.
3) The mirror is the same flexible mirror found on all toddler toys. I dislike these mirrors because they provide distorted images and are not durable for future generations of kids who will use this Playzone.
4) I wish the gate lock was easier to manipulate. You push a button and slide a latch to retract or release two prongs. Locking the gate can take a second because I have to slightly lift the gate so the prongs extend properly into the holes in the lock. I'll get used to it. If not, wall segments are easy to pull apart and reattach (though that's kind of loud).
6) The gate is not full length top-to-bottom. There is a trippable lip you step over when going into or out of the Playzone.

All-in-all this is the best play yard I've found on the market as of spring 2006. With a few tweaks it could be great.

Update four months later: The Playzone is still great. Our kid can push two segments of gate outward a little at the yellow joints (this is noticeable because we configure the Playzone in a square shape), but it's not a big deal. We don't bother using the gate door, preferring to just walk/climb over the wall.

Our kid enjoys the music buttons on the entertainment panel, but I wish this panel was included in a separately-purchased expansion kit so that the core product was sold at a lower price. Two Playzones combined leave ample room for Mom and Dad and baby to play together. Our cat can jump in and out via a couch placed next to the Playzone (a good thing for us).

I have not experienced a problem with the door hinge. My door locks when you close the door and move an outside lever that pushes two blue plastic "bolts" from the wall base out and into holes in the door. A locked door shouldn't open when a toddler pushes or pulls on the door. If that happens in your case, yeah, contact the manufacturer.

I envision never needing to lock and unlock the door. While our kid is small, it's easier for us to climb into the Playzone. When our kid grows bigger, we'll just leave the door unlocked.

Baby Einstein Discovering Water Play Gym $70

Let me start by saying that I was very hesitant about buying this play gym because of some of the negative reviews I read. However, I really wanted some sort of play gym for my month-old daughter, and I wanted to see it in person before buying. Our local Babies R Us only had two models in the store when I went there: this one and the Carter's Butterfly Play Gym.

Despite the glowing reviews I'd read about the Butterfly gym, when I saw it in person I was extremely unimpressed. In my opinion, the colors were dull and nothing about the gym excited my interest. The Discovering Water gym, however, immediately caught my eye with its vibrant colors and water-filled music box. I decided to click the pic above and give it a try and figured I could always return it if either my daughter or I hated it.

I have to say I'm DELIGHTED with this gym. No, it's not perfect, but then again, what is? Baby Einstein Discovering Water Play Gym is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The first thing I really liked about this gym was that it's different than all the others I've seen. Every other gym seems to have the same standard design: a flat floor mat (usually square) and two overhead arches that cross in the middle in an X shape. The DW gym, however, has a rippled floor mat with flaps that can be lifted. Each flap is shaped like a different sea creature (a fish, dolphin, whale, etc) and has a cartoon picture of that animal on top and a silkscreened photo of the real animal underneath along with the name of the animal in English, French and Spanish.

Even though my daughter is too young to actively lift the flaps to look underneath, at least they give her something to grab onto at floor level when she's lying on the mat. As she gets older, she can do more actual playing with the flaps themselves. I just feel that this gives the mat itself an extra layer of interactivity that's missing with the other activity gym mats out there.

The standard X shaped overhead arches of other gyms form a square shape (four equal-sized spaces between where the arches meet the mat) and leave the gym wide open on all sides (which, I realize, some people might love). The DW gym has two overhead arcs that come together in the middle and then bow out again rather than criss-crossing. This makes more rectangular-shaped openings (two long sides and two short sides) than with other gyms.

What I really like about this design is that the arches themselves have a short length of netting (like a fisherman's net) hanging down from the top. This combined with having one short end occupied by the water-filled music box really gives the gym a semi-enclosed feeling, like the inside of an undersea cave. I think it makes for a wonderful spot for imaginative play, much more so than other activity gym designs I've seen.

The gym itself can accommodate 12 hanging toys, although only 3 are included. I think the selection of toys that are included isn't the best. The plastic fish reminds me of a dog's squeaky toy, right down to the squeaker inside, but the high-contrast colors really seem to attract my daughter's attention. The stuffed turtle is one of the Baby Einstein licensed characters - it's cute enough, but it doesn't "do" anything, and when it hangs overhead the only thing to look at from below is its plain, undecorated stomach.

This is a toy best played with at eye level, unattached to the activity gym. (I bought another, slightly larger stuffed turtle toy with a mirror in the stomach to hang overhead). The third "toy" is really a set of thick plastic flashcards with sea creatures and their names on them. The pictures are very nice, but I don't really see how a young child would necessarily play with them except maybe to clink the plastic discs together (kind of like a set of plastic "baby keys").

I wound up purchasing 3 or 4 additional toys from a variety of companies to add to the gym - I object to having to spend the extra money when the gym itself cost so much, but all the activity gyms seem to be designed this way.

The water-filled music box is a nice touch, and I like the fact that it has a motion-sensitive setting. The baby needs to actually shake the arches (by pulling a toy) to activate the box in this mode, and I wish it were a bit more sensitive (it takes quite a bit of motion to set it off).

I really like the pat mat in the floor of the gym. This is basically a thick plastic bag filled with two-dimensional sea creatures and an ocean-looking background. The instructions say to fill it with water and empty after each use, but I don't bother emptying and refilling it and we've had no problems. Be warned, though - at first, it looks like you won't be able to fill it with water because the fill hole looks like one solid piece of plastic with a cover. My husband and I actually thought we needed to poke a hole in the plastic in order to fill it. Don't do this!

The fill holes are actually so very small you can't really see them - just put the sink faucet up to the fill hole and run the water in. The mat fills pretty slowly but it does fill, and keeping the holes so tiny probably keeps the mat from leaking all over the place. We haven't had any problems with leakage at all since getting the gym.

I also like the crescent-shaped pillow that's included with the gym. It's great for putting under your baby's head so she can look up at the hanging toys, and of course, it's perfect for "tummy time." The pat mat and liftable flaps on the mat of the gym give baby some interesting things to play with and look at at floor level during tummy time, too.

On a side note, I took a Kick and Play Piano and tied it across the other "short" side of the gym (opposite where the water-filled music box is) and it's worked out wonderfully. This gives my daughter something to kick (she's a big kicker) plus when she does kick it, it moves the arches enough to activate the motion-sensor music box. I can either leave the piano in the "off" mode and use the music box activated by kicking, or I can leave the music box off and let my baby's kicks operate the music of the piano.

The biggest disadvantage of this gym, in my opinion, is the price. It's definitely the most expensive gym I've found, but in lots of cases (the Gymini and the original Baby Einstein, for example), it's only more expensive by about $10. For all the "extras" that this gym provides, I think the added expense is well worth it.

Play Wall $60

We clicked the pic above and bought this toy for my 7 1/2 month old over the weekend. She's able to sit up, crawl, pull up, cruise, and stand by herself for moments at a time. I thought this would be wonderful for her and give her something of her own to pull up on.

She loves crawling thru the curtains and making the chimes jingle. Her favorite part is the ball that hangs. She loves grabbing hold of it and shaking it to hear the balls inside. Each time she grabs the ball, she lets out a huge squeal or laugh.

Unfortunately, this play wall is not near as heavy as it needs to be. We have hard wood floors, and every time she attempts to pull up on the wall, it slides away from her. The one time she did keep it still enough to pull part of the way up, it started tipping over! Play Wall is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Fisher Price should have made this toy more sturdy! Other than that, it's a great toy and my little girl just loves it!

Gymini Total Playground Activity Mat $60

I just bought this mat this past weekend from Beardsmen after comparing it online with other playmats. One reason I was drawn to this one is because the mat is much bigger than a lot of the other ones.

I also like the idea of snapping the sides together to form somewhat of a border around my baby. As soon as it arrived by mail, I couldn't wait to unpack it. I set it up, which was very easy and put my daughter, Anisa, who is 3 1/2 months old, on it.

Right away she started batting at the dangling figures and kicking on the kick pad. She really likes the tiger :-). She spent about a 1/2 hour playing on this mat and was just smiling and laughing. I left her with her dad for about another 20 minutes, and when I came back, she'd fallen asleep right there on the mat. I guess she played so much, she wore herself out. Wow!

Another thing that I like about this mat is the fact that the bars that hold the hanging figures simply unsnap from each other, lay flat and I can then change her right on the mat without having to pick her up to change her diaper somewhere else and then bring her back to play. Gymini Total Playground Activity Mat is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

I do have an issue with the kick pad. It seems to take a lot of strength and exactness for the lights to light up and to play the music. If she doesn't kick exactly on the imprint showing the ball of the foot, it doesn't light or play the music. And I've gotta say my daughter has pretty strong kicks when we are playing, but I guess they are not strong enough when she kicks this kick pad.

Overall, I really like this mat because it has some really nice features, even though it is a bit pricey. Aside from the kick pad issues, we really do like this toy because it is both educational and fun and it keeps Anisa well entertained and happy.

Laugh & Learn Learning PuppyLaugh & Learn Learning Puppy $15

We have this and Hug & Learn Baby Tad, and we prefer this puppy because it has a lot of variety. It has two modes - learning and musical, which are selected by pressing the button on its foot. The other foot, both hands, an ear, tummy and nose play sounds or songs when pressed.

The puppy identifies body parts, colors and sings fun songs. It is very colorful, has a flashing bone on his shirt and volume control through a velcro seam on its back. My young son finds it very easy to push the buttons. Laugh & Learn Learning Puppy is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

My 10.5 month old son and "almost" 2 year old daughter LOVE this puppy!!! It is so cute! And very good sized too! My daughter will sit and play with it - pushing on the ear, hands, feet, stomach and nose... making it talk and sing. My son just likes to dance away while the puppy sings (teehee)! We all have a good time with it!

It says many different things - too many to list here. My daughter's favorites are to hear it say (when pushing on the nose), "Achoooo" (sneezing sound), or "You got my nose" (she gets a kick out of that everytime)! She also loves that it 'sings', "The itsy bitsy spider" (her favorite song)!

Terrific buy and lots of fun!!!!!!

Sesame Street Sing n' Giggle Tool Bench $43

This is an adorable tool bench. It is so much better than the wooden tool bench I played with as a child. Elmo sings a song at the push of a button. The saw (Bert and Ernie) and the drill (cookie monster), cracks jokes. When the nails or the bolts are driven/screwed into the bench it makes appropriate noises.

Adults seem to be enamored with this toy as well. My father-in-law couldn't stop playing with it; long after my son went to bed. Sesame Street Sing n' Giggle Tool Bench is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

There is a tool belt that you can purchase separately, however I would not suggest buying it. It is cute and there is a space for it on the tool bench, however it also comes with a hammer and screwdriver. It seems unnecessary to have two of each.

Elmo's song does seem to be a bit loud, but you can push the same button to end the song. Overall, I think this was a great purchase.

Rock, Roll & Ride XL Trike $35

This is so reasonable in price and provides so much fun for so long. We gave it to my son when he was one year. He is two and still uses it every day.

He can't do the pedals yet but he goes around the block on this propelling himself with his feet. It's extremely sturdy and balanced and is not prone to tipping.

In fact, he has only fallen a couple times and that was when he got on or off and just didn't swing his leg over it far enough. Rock, Roll & Ride XL Trike is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Yep, there are more expensive nicer looking trikes, but this is fun and relatively safe even before they can pedal. And my son still has fun to come on this one once he learns to pedal!

Hug & Learn Baby Tad top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviewsLeapFrog Hug & Learn Baby Tad $20

Completely irresistible!!! He is the cutest little guy with a tiny "baby" voice! This is great for young ones at 6 or 9 months to 3 years (or maybe beyond)! He is very soft and cuddly.

I bought him for our 19 month old Grandson. He loves the colored blinking lights in the shape of a star, square, circle, triangle, diamond and heart. When you push a flashing button, Baby Tad sings or says something like "peek-a-boo" or "this is a green square".

There is a lip print on his cheek. When you push it, Baby Tad says "give me a hug". Baby Tad sings in his cute "baby" voice six favorite children's songs like Itsy Bitsy Spider, Mary Had a Little Lamb, If You are Happy Clap Your Hands. He will keep kids learning and having fun for hours!

And there is a button to turn him OFF; a blessing for parents! A great baby shower gift! I am giving the Spanish version Baby Tad to a bilingual friend as a baby shower gift! Hug & Learn Baby Tad is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

We could not decide which mobile to buy for his crib, so we bought Tad instead. He's been lulling our little prince to sleep ever since. The daytime mode is great. I especially appreciate that the songs are sung by a child-like voice.

Many toys on the market now speak or sing in grown-up or "computer" voices. Leap Frog did a great job in recognizing that children respond to and are soothed by other children's voices. We get most use out of the night time classical lullabies. The sound quality is amazing. It's soft, relaxing, soothing music. The lights on Tad's bib light up individually in time with the symphonies. It's very soothing; especially in a darkened nursery.

One thing I wanted to point out was the battery life. Don't buy the cheap batteries. Go ahead and buy the good ones. Tad lasts a long time with the good ones; not so long with the cheapies. The good ones lasted us over 4 months this last time with everyday use. The cheapies last a couple of weeks, and make Tad work erratically when the batteries get low.

In short, clicking the pic above and buying Tad for my son was money well spent.

Kettler Kettrike Happy Navigator Tricycle $155

Ideal for children just learning to get around on their own, the Kettrike Happy Navigator tricycle boasts several versatile features for kids and the grownups who love them. The trike employs Kettler's telescoping Quick-Adjust frame, which invites parents to expand the trike each time their toddler experiences a growth spurt.

The telescoping frame is a must for parents who don't want to ditch the trike after just a few months of use. Happy Navigator Tricycle is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Kids will also love the Auto-Freewheel function, which lets them rest their feet on the pedals while a parent guides them around with the push bar. And thanks to the Parental Control steering lock system, kids won't be able to steer the trike in random directions while the grownups push.

Other details include a patented rear wheel steering system with an on/off mechanism and Safety-Trax wheels with a dual-layer safety tread wheel pattern that keeps the trike from spinning on wet pavement or other slippery surfaces. As with all Kettrikes, the Happy Navigator is backed by a three-year warranty.

Radio Flyer Pathfinder Wagon $70

This is a fantastic wagon! I had searched the internet looking for the best wagon re: durability, comfort, capacity, price AND SAFETY. This is the only one that keeps your children securely in the wagon-- providing a seat belt complete with between-the-legs strap.

It handles very well both pulling and pushing, and takes corners without a hint of tipping. The handle stays upright when you're not moving and doesn't pinch little fingers. The area between the wheels and the wagon is large enough for fingers to pass freely without pinching either. Radio Flyer Pathfinder Wagon is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The wheels are quiet, and the cup holders have been a big hit for my three kids. Although it technically seats two, all three of my boys, (ages 4, 3, and 1 yr) have ridden in it at the same time---and it was still easy to move!

I love this wagon and strongly recommend it.

Chicka Chicka Conga Blue $25

I clicked the pic above and purchased this for my daughter. Within a few days, she learned her ABC's! This was her favorite book, but having her favorite character sing her the song, made it fun! ANY Blue's Clue's fan will LOVE this item! Durable, wipeable for minor stains and a toy that will be played with long after all the other ones have been set aside! A great gift for any child!

I wanted to originally purchase a Tumblin' Tigger for my 2 yr old daughter. When it was all sold out, I hesitantly looked at the Elmo and Blues Clues characters. As I'm sure the Elmo one would have been great, I believe I made an excellent choice w/Blues Clues.

First, when you touch her right paw, it sings the song, "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom" which I've read to her a lot. It's fun to hear her try and sing the story as well. It's a catchy tune that isn't annoying. Blues Room Chicka Chicka Conga Blue is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Second, it recites the ABCs when you press her other paw. Blue will stop randomly at a letter, and says something that starts with that letter, and asks the child to help her make that sound. (i.e., "C is for Cow, make a cow sound with me".)

It's neat b/c she never stops at the same place twice. And last, Blue "dances" and wiggles her tail while she is singing, fun for the kids to interact with. A great toy, I am very happy with my end result as a gift.

Baby Farm Friends Bowling $20

This is a nice little set of plush animal bowling pins and a soft ball with which to knock them down. We clicked the pic above and purchased it when our youngest child was an infant (he's now 16 months) and his brother was a toddler set on throwing everything he could get his hands on.

The soft aspect of the toys drew us to them, as did the different sounds, which would appeal to the baby. As it turns out, neither of them have ever really used it for the intended purpose - the older child (now 2.5 years) prefers body bowling over using the ball! He sets up some of the pins and then jumps off of the couch into the middle of them.

I have only two complaints about the toys. Baby Farm Friends Bowling is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

First of all, they attract animal hair and other floor muck very easily and are difficult to clean. We have two dogs, and the pins often seem to have more dog hair on them than the dogs!

Secondly, they can be hard for the kids to stand up on the carpet. After a few tries on his own, the 2 year old gets frustrated and walks away or, if he's in a bad mood, starts tossing them all over the living room.

Ultimately, this is probably a set better suited to a pet-free household or a no/low pile carpet floor.

Fridge DJ Radio - LeapFrog Interactive $15

My 16 month-old son loves this toy, both on & off the fridge. One great feature about it is that it turns itself off when not in use. Great to keep toddlers safely busy in the kitchen while you're cooking.

When I first considered buying this toy, I thought it was a bit pricey. I clicked the pic above and went for it anyway and my son just loves it. It is very durable! When it plays songs, the screen lights up with different "pictures" that go with the music. Fridge DJ Radio LeapFrog Interactive is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

For example, when it plays Old MacDonald, the screen shows "pictures" in red of a tractor, a duck, a dog, and then E I E I O, in accordance with the song's words. It does not sing words though, it only plays the music, giving mom or dad a chance to sing the words, or make them up if they aren't known, for baby's entertainment (or not!).

Once I saw all it could do I decided it was well worth the money I paid for it, and it gives our son something different to do when I'm in the kitchen.

Little Tikes EasyScore Basketball Set $26

We clicked the pic above and bought this toy for our 16 month old twin girls. They absolutely love it!

We did have problems with the rim falling off easily at first; but I called Little Tikes and they helped me solve the problem. They told me to take the backboard off, lay it on the floor and attach the hoop and then actually step on the flat part of the hoop until I heard it snap into place. Little Tikes EasyScore Basketball Set is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

This worked like a charm and the hoop hasn't fallen off since. We all enjoy playing basketball. Little Tikes has great toys and their customer service folks are really helpful if there's ever a problem.

Fisher Price Little People Lil' Pirate Ship $20

My 2 1/2 year old son wanted the Peter Pan Pirate Ship from the Disney store. Unfortunately it's $60, looks flimsy and didn't seem near worth the money. When I saw this on Beardsmen I knew I had to click the pic above and buy it.

My son plays with it all the time. He loves making people "walk the plank". It allows him to be creative and let's me see his imaginative playing at it's best. Fisher Price Little People Lil' Pirate Ship is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

It's a very well made toy. It's sturdy and has lasted through my son's rough and tough way of playing.

I would definitely recommend buying this if you have a young child.

GeoTrax Working Town Train Railway Playset $39

I love this train set! A friend gave this to our two year old son last Christmas and out of several different train sets, this has turned out to be by far the best. It is the most interesting and easiest to use, and with the very easy-to-use remote control and cool sounds it maintains interest for all ages.

Ours has had 9 months of not-so-gentle use and is still going strong. The batteries have only been replaced twice (the second time was just last week) and it's had plenty of time in the toy box with batteries still in there (we hear the trains beep once in a while as they get jostled, but we have never bothered to remove them) We bought another train in January, and it, too has run great - we have yet to replace the batteries on that one) We don't pull it out every day, but it has definitely gotten a good bit of use.

With regard to the tracks and other *stuff* in this particular set - all fantastic. This comes with enough tracks and things to do a variety of configurations. I love that it has a 'mountain' with a bridge so the train can go over and under. That is also great if you get the elevated track to expand it (that's what I would get next if you want to expand after this set)

The windmill and factory (or whatever it is) are really fun. The train can make them move, or your child can turn knobs by hand to make parts move. Nice for promoting curiosity, problem solving and a bit of basic physics:) My son (almost three now) especially loves the windmill. He likes to remove the wind catchers and use them... um, creatively... GeoTrax Working Town Train Railway Playset is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

For small children you do need to realize that there are parts of this that will likely be used as hammers and 'shooters' etc. BUT the tracks are easy to put together, and generally stay together very well. It really is good for 2 1/2 and up, as the manufacturer says.

Our 11 month old daughter LOVES to watch the trains go around too... she also likes to sit on the track and move things around, which frustrates brother and dad, but it's durable enough to survive a bit of rough treatment and I really don't worry about it hurting her (although there are some small pieces which are potential choking hazards)

I also really appreciate the details on the pieces. Straight tracks have little wrenches that have fallen off the trains (or perhaps left behind by workmen?) A tiny squirrel here, a piece of rope there... ALL the GeoTrax seem to have these small details in the molds, and the more I look the more I find.

My son was the first to see a little owl looking out of one of the trees in a set we just got recently. They are the same colors as the rest of the pieces, but my husband and I are thinking about painting some of them. This is an aspect that really adds to the imaginative and dramatic play qualities of these toys.

If you like them, these sets are more than a bit addictive... Mom and Dad keep wanting to do more and more elaborate set ups, so beware how much space could be taken up. So far we have been impressed and happy with all except for the "Workin' Roundhouse", but young kids really don't *need* anything more than this set and maybe an extra train (to make it easier to share with friends, sibs or dad) to be really happy and creative with their play.

Pedal Car Sedan - Taxi $178

The famous sad face pedal cars of the late 1940s and early 1950s inspired our pedal sedan. It was nick-named sad face because of its front end, similar to a 1949 Oldsmobile, a 1949 Packard or a 1949 Buick, looks like an up-side-down smile.

Our vehicle is trimmed with a chrome windshield, chrome steering wheel, chrome hubcaps and a chrome hood ornament. Pedal Car Sedan - Taxi is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

As with all of our vehicles, it is made out of heavy gauge steel just like the original pedal cars of the forties. We make the sedan in various colors.

Up & Down Roller Coaster Ride-on top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviewsUp & Down Roller Coaster Ride-on $100

It may not feature any loop-de-loops or terrifying hairpin turns, but preschoolers will likely find this 10-foot-long roller coaster every bit as thrilling as grownups find the amusement park version.

Molded in brightly colored plastic, it's built for years of wear in either the backyard or the playroom. The set's components fit together to form a downhill ride with another smaller hill about halfway through.

What we loved most about this set is the fact that the individual parts are just as much fun as the fully assembled kit. The car, bright yellow with a sturdy handle, could just as easily be used around the house if the child is too young for the coaster.

And the ramp system is plenty of fun to roll cars, balls, or anything else. Perhaps our tiny toy tester said it best: "Wheee!" Up & Down Roller Coaster Ride-on is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

A Step2 classic for ages 2-5 years. Now children can enjoy the thrill of an amusement park right in their own home. Fully assembled coaster car has high back, handrail and foot rests for secure ride.

Two non-slip steps lock securely for easy access from both sides. There’s a full ten feet of track in 3 easy-to-attach sections and recessed retainers hold coaster car until child is ready to roll. Made in the USA.

Radio Flyer All-Terrain Cargo Wagon - 29 top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviewsRadio Flyer All-Terrain Cargo Wagon $120

I bought this wagon for my nephew. He was a little over a year old at the time. My sister and brother-in-law now take my nephew in the wagon everywhere they go. The ATW has enough room for the nephew, a picnic, and any gear they may need to drag along. The tires are great for getting through any terrain. The great thing is that now that they are expecting another child there will be plenty of room for the two of them plus gear!

We clicked the pic above and bought the second wagon anticipating a family vacation at the beach with our 5 and 2 year old boys (each approx 35 lbs). We used this to haul our goodies to the beach daily - it handled the sand very well. Radio Flyer All-Terrain Cargo Wagon is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

When cruising the boardwalk, we had a place to keep our camera bag, snacks, and two boys that wanted to roam too far on their own. The 2 year old also took several naps in it. It fits well in our 95 Ford Windstar with the 3rd seat pulled forward. The handle folds under and the side rails are removable so you can lay it on its side to fit in even smaller spaces possibly even the trunk of our Nissan Sentra. The flat bottom gives us ultimate flexibility. The wooden sides and bottom won't get too hot too touch.

The umbrella was a nice accessory as was the bed pad though the one without the sides is a few inches short. Lots of parents stop us to ask about our choice. We are expecting our third child soon and will be using the wagon for YEARS to come. Parades, zoo trips, beach, neighborhood walks. The perfect transportation when they are too big/too old for a stroller. CLICK THE PIC ABOVE AND BUY IT. Well worth the money!!!!

This wagon was my second pick, but has ended up being my first choice! The wooden wagon bed stays cool even in the hot summer sun (unlike a metal bed), and the tall wooden sides keep "exploring" babies in their proper place. My sons love riding around in this wagon, and it has room enough for all of his favorite toys too. Walks are smooth and quiet (no rattling parts) and the large tires really make this wagon a pleasure to pull.

It is the best open-bed wagon out there (as opposed to the wagons with doors and seats, which are totally different, I think.) We have used it all the time. The ATW has big rubber tires that are great for the street or off-road. This wood bottom wagon is better than the metal bottom one because it's much bigger, and it doesn't get all hot in the sun.

I used to fit a toddler, an infant carrier and some toys in there and go to the park. Now I fit two toddlers, trucks, snacks, etc.

P.S. Buy the umbrella that clips on the side, too

Step 2 Little Helper's Complete Kitchen $110

This mini-kitchen is PERFECT for the two-year-old toddler going through the "mimic mommy" phase. My daughter received this for her second birthday, and it could not have been at a better time. She is very social and active (outgoing) and rarely plays with ANY toys (especially not puzzles, books, and other quiet play). She has played with this kitchen more in the past couple weeks than all her other toys combined in the past year.

The kitchen stands about her height (approx 3 ft) and isn't too deep to sit in the corner and be out of the way. I LOVE that it DOESN'T make any noises, words, etc (other than the phone beeps). She is too young to get any benefit out of it, and makes her own noises instead (and she can continue to use it if I'm on the phone or baby brother is napping).

I also love that the refrigerator is full-sized, unlike most models. I don't think she would know what the half-sized refrigerator on other play sets are. Little Helper's Complete Kitchen is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

This kitchen is SUPER durable. I've caught her twice, now, jumping up and down on the oven and dishwasher doors, and I can't believe they don't break. The stickers are coming up just a little on some edges, but I have every reason to believe it is because we stored this in the garage in sub-freezing temperatures for a few weeks before her birthday. They are not curling enough for her to notice and pull them off (which she would do immediately).

Her favorite things about it:
- The phone (what toddler doesn't like a play phone?)
- The sink (pretends to wash the dishes)
- The ice/water dispenser in the refrigerator door (sees mom and dad use this on the real one all the time)
- The microwave (pretends to push the buttons - the other day I found a plate with "pizza" on it in there, so she definitely knows what it is!)

We bought her some pots/pans at Walgreen's for $4 that fit perfectly on the stove (they are about 4" diameter). We also bought her the Living Food For Fun plastic food set here on Beardsmen and a cheap "tea" set with cups and plates at Wal-Mart.

Naturally Playful Sand and Water Activity Center top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviewsNaturally Playful Sand and Water Activity Center $80

This sand box is amazing. Considering that the others are the same price, this is, without a doubt, the one to purchase. The leak-proof top, the toys, the natural look of the toy and the shade umbrella all make this unique. Naturally Playful Sand and Water Activity Center is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Things to know:

1) do NOT cut the black cord on the outside of the box. This holds the top on and makes it resistant to rain getting into the toy. This is not evident when you purchase it, as the instruction manual is inside the box.

2) The umbrella is a true navy, not black as it appears in the picture

3) get over your dreams of a perfect sand and water table, with the sand in one area and the water in the other. My daughter loves the sand and throws it all around our deck. She mixes the water in the sand area and vise versa. Let it go, as hard as it is.

4) the sand area holds 40 lbs. of sand. An average bag is 50 lbs (around $5) But get a second bag anyway (see #3)

We purchased this table for our 3 year old daughter and she loves it. It was a smash with all the kids at her birthday party, not so much with the parents of the sand coated kids. My main reason for wanting a table was to prevent killing the grass underneath as a traditional sandbox would.

I chose this one because it has an umbrella (which is very stable and adjustable) and because it has a hard cover. The cover attaches very securely thus keeping additional water, bugs, worms, leaves and various other things out...including my daughter, which comes in handy.

My daughter is very pleased with the sand/water combo, rather I should say, the sand "in" the water combo. :o) Having a sandbox at her waist level seems to be very convenient for her. She scoots back and forth most of the time but can sit on a little chair and play too. I intend to bring it into the basement in the winter and fill it with rice (uncooked of course) so she can enjoy it year round.

The drawback is the legs. They are attached with screws that can easily tear out and are not enough to keep the legs stable. Ours have not torn because I am very watchful of the position of the legs and prop them back up whenever I see them go askew. Other than that, I would highly recommend this table.

We've had this table for months now and I wanted to make some additional comments. The table is difficult to move by yourself but I have my 3 yr old help me, she can easily carry the water side as long as there is no water in it. We have also taken this to a couple of family functions to keep my daughter from digging in the dirt or the flower beds, etc. It's quite portable without the water and as long as you make sure the legs are straight and it isn't free floating before you drive off.

Another thing that I didn't think of was that because the kids stand to play with the sand, they don't get any sand up the legs of their shorts or in their underpants. Also, the umbrella shades more if you put it very low, just a few inches above your child's head.

Ladybug Tent and Tunnel Combo $60

We ordered this for our daughter who is almost 2 for Christmas. It was easy to set up, although I didn't realize how much room it would take up! It's big enough for an adult and a child, and an adult can even fit through the tunnel. Our cats love to play in it, too!

My daughter was 23 months old when we clicked the pic above and purchased this tent and she loves it! Putting it together and taking it down is extremely easy, so we have had it both outdoors and even indoors on occasion. Also, it folds up very small and is easy to store when you aren't using it. She drags her toys in and out of it and has the best time! Ladybug Tent and Tunnel Combo is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

I have a 5 year old and 2 year old. This product has brought my husband and I moments of sanity and peace (and quiet).

Baby Alive Doll $100

This doll is very cute.

She is just like a real baby.

The only problem is when u feed her it is very! messy. Baby Alive Doll is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Also make sure u have extra diapers every time u feed her she poo's\pee's!!!

Shake & Go Racers: Raceway Playset $75

Our three year old loves his Shake and Go cars, so the Raceway seemed like a no-brainer for Christmas. Unfortunately, this playset just doesn't live up to its promise and as a result, it's already collecting dust while the more engaging toys (Geotrax trains) get all of the attention. Now, every child's tastes are different, but I can really see his point in this case.

The cars themselves are battery-operated and you rev them up by simply shaking them. This is great for younger kids because it eliminates the hassle, mess (cords) and risk of electricity. The longer you shake, the farther/faster they'll go - just set them down on the floor and they're off.

The Raceway guides them along an oval track, tallying how many laps each car has completed and even which car is in the lead. The critical flaw here is that with just their own internal power to go on, the cars only race for a few short laps before your child has to pick them up and repeat it. Also, it's very likely that one car will konk out before the other one does and since the track is configured for the cars to switch lanes each lap, this means that rear-end collisions are inevitable. These collisions are loud, they potentially damage the cars and could even pinch your child's fingers if he/she isn't careful when reaching out for the stopped car.

Even without any collisions, the Raceway is possibly the loudest toy we've ever owned. The squealing-and-clacking noise that the wheels make on the tracks is unfortunately so loud that it drowns out the cool engine sounds of the car themselves. Shake & Go Racers Raceway Playset is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The Raceway has a nifty finish line that announces who's in the lead and how many laps are left, but it's useless since (1) the track noise drowns it out and (2) the cars can't possibly finish an entire 10-lap race.

Simply put, the Raceway actually limits how much fun your child can have with Shake and Go cars. We enjoy them so much more out in the open - racing across the floor and driving around (and through) obstacles that we devise out of household objects.

The Shake and Go Raceway is a great product idea, but its poor design completely stifles that idea. As others have accurately stated, just get the cars and avoid this waste of space and money.

PROS
* Sturdy construction and quick, easy assembly
* The cars themselves are a great toy - kids love shaking them, the real sounds that they make and the way they take off

CONS
* Self-powered cars need to be continuously recharged mid-race
* Exceedingly loud even when the cars aren't crashing into each other

Thomas the Tank Engine $20

My little guy just loves this. It is very compact when folded up and actually fits next to my son's entertainment center in a tiny little slit between the center and wall. It is a nice size when unfolded.

We did notice a funny smell after opening it at first but it quickly disappeared. Actually when we folded it up to store I just stuck a downy sheet in between one of the folds and that helped right away!

It is actually roomy enough to have an adult sitting inside on one end and a child on the other end. We love it here!  Thomas the Tank Engine is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

It's a nice quiet place for our son to go to read books...and sometimes he likes to peak out the front of the train and watch a Thomas Video!

Disney Cars: Flo's V8 Café Playset $55

This is the nicest set out of the four sets. Flo's lights up like the other ones, but the fact that they can "fuel up" is so neat. Also, there is a secret room at the top, too cool.

However, this toy is so hard to find. I had to search for a long time to come across one finally on Beardsmen. There is just not enough of these to meet the demand. Flo's V-8 Cafe is the most popular set and just look at it, it's great. It is so popular and hard to find right now and people are paying around $50 for this set on e-bay, before they were going for around $100.

K-B Toys had it for pre-sale, but it sold out within a day. PRE-SALE!!!! I can't believe it. I let it pass by, but then a month later Beardsmen had it and I clicked the pic above and bought it . This is such a cool toy. I am so excited to have gotten one for my son. Disney Cars Flo's V8 Cafe Playset is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The set lights up and takes batteries. It connects to the other three sets so that you can make Radiator Springs. I would recommend it for 4 year olds and up. Small details could get broken by a younger child. Plus, this may very well be a collector's item later on. You never know.

Highly recommended for children and adult collectors alike.

Leapster Multimedia Learning System: Silver $60

I clicked the pic above and bought my Leapster and my kids have loved it almost too much. It is constantly being played with. After so much use I wasn't surprised when it started to have a few glitches after 6-7 months of such heavy use, but I decided to call Leapfrog and see if there was anything I could do.

He told me to take the cartridges and to dip a Qtip in alcohol (I used a table knife covered with a rag dipped in rubbing alcohol) and clean the inside of the cartridges, then put it in and out of the Leapster. I cleaned my cartridges and it has worked perfectly since. The collection of dust inside just needs to be cleaned out and then it worked like new again.

I have all the cartridges and my kids favorites are: First Grade and Kindergarten (These are just plain fun to all my kids from PreK to 5th grade - they like the arcade style and the race car driving that is rewards to learning.)  Leapster Multimedia Learning System is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

My girl who loves drawing plays Mr. Pencil Drawing program a ton, and my Preschoolers favorite is the Disney princess because she is obsessed with Princesses, and of course the Letter Factory. She is starting to read in Preschool and I give total credit to the Letter Factory and Word factory games. We just got The Incredibles and Junie B cartridges and of those 2 of course The Incredibles is winning and is being played a ton (but what do you expect with the movie as cool as it is :)

Mrs. Stretch does a Spelling game. Dash does place value like if you have 2354, where does the 3 go, and the other 2 do 2 digit math and teach times tables. Then you are given key cards as you do the game.

The family works cooperatively getting through the maze as you get more key cards. I really like the Leapster, and my favorite thing is that I can say to my kids it's your night with the Leapster the sooner you get in bed the sooner you get to play, and they will climb in bed at 7:00 and play till 8:30-9 until I say lights out and make them turn it off. And they all keep track of whose night it is to play.

I also love that my little girl is really getting good control of the pencil (hand eye coordination) and that she is just barely 4 and is already putting words together. I love it.

Melissa and Doug Deluxe Standing Easel $48

This easel is a great buy! Very sturdy and high quality as most of Melissa and Doug products. Colorful, kid friendly and easy to put together. Both the writing boards and the trays are adjustable for the height of your child. It folds up easy, but stands strong.

This easel DOES have a place for a paper roll!! Large Standing/Folding Easel is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

I did not think it did by the Beardsmen description (I almost bought a more expensive one for the paper roll but decided to go with this and am so glad I did) ... the roll goes in the center between the boards and the paper comes up through the top and under a paper guide in front of the dry erase side.

I can't imagine why you would spend more on another brand of easel, this one has everything I could think of wanting and is simple, solid wood, looks good and is super functional.

Leapster L-Max Handheld Learning Game System $80

My son is entering Kindergarten and having a lot of trouble writing his letters, numbers etc. The Leapster L-max (unlike the original Leapster) allowed me to purchase a game called letters on the loose. This game asks him to create his own letter book that he can write the upper and lower case letters after a pen narrates the direction he should write each line in. He then follows the same lines. If he does it wrong it asks him to do it again. When it's correct it's added to his book in his own handwriting that he can review anytime. It also congratulates them when they do it correctly. We clap as well. That's most of the fun is the accomplishment he feels.

The BONUS feature is you can hook it up to the TV and see it on the big screen. (A great way to share your achievement with the family) He loves to show Mom & Dad what new letters he wrote. Sure you can do this on paper. My son gets bored with me after about 15 minutes. Professor Quigley is way more cool than Mom.

Back to the Leapster L-Max; the OLD GAMES WORK ON THE LEAPSTER, you just can't play them on TV. So what! You can't on the old Leapster either. The new L-Max gives you the capability of purchasing ANY of the Leapster software and any of the L-max titles which do work on the TV.  Leapster L-Max Handheld Learning Game System is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The L-Max is the newer model you can do more with but still use all the old software on handheld. After all the handheld portion is what they use most, I think. The TV is something added that he likes to show us what he has already done and saved inside.

It's much more educational than Interact TV or V-Smile or any of those. My son will not touch those now.

I suggest: Letters on The Loose (L-max), SpongeBob (L-max) and Kindergarten (For Reg Leapster) next I want to get (L-Max) Number Zero- all about math for K+.

Dora the Explorer: Dora's Talking Dollhouse with Lights, Sounds & Music $50

I bought this for my 3 year old's birthday and she has hardly stopped playing with it the past week! She and her sisters, ages 11 months and 9 years old, all love to play with the house. The main complaint I have is that you do have to take all the accessories out of the house to fold it up, but other than that it is very fun to play with.

The bilingual messages on the various areas of the house give an added bit of fun over a regular doll house. My girls have also grabbed other Dora themed toys (jungle bath toy, Lego set) and made it part of Dora's "backyard" along with animals from the toy box.

My three year old used her birthday money from her grandmas to buy Abuela, Diego, Tico, Boots, and the Media Center (her choices, not mine). I purchased the bedroom set along with the house. Dora's Talking Dollhouse is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Some things are hard to find, such as the other Dora (our dog has chewed the one that came with the house) and the bathroom set. Since the house is a hot item, I'm not too surprised some things are harder to find than others.

I would strongly recommend clicking the pic above and purchasing this house for hours of fun!!!

IlluStory Book KitIlluStory Book Kit $24

Our son has written 2 books with Illustory already! He loves seeing the words that he writes typed onto the pages (by the company) and the drawings he does come out beautifully printed on the book. He is so excited and proud of himself when he shows his friends, family and teacher his publications! The book even comes with an About-the-Author page just like real published books!

Everything that you need to write and draw is provided in the kit and the instructions are very easy to follow. In just a few weeks you get back a real hardcover book! The experience was so terrific, we plan on having him write a book each year so he can see how much his writing changes year after year. And just as soon as his new baby sister is old enough, we'll start her writing books with Illustory too. The books are a great family keepsake. We love them.

Thank you for carrying this terrific product. My kids love to read and one day my son told me he wanted to write his own book someday. I saw this kit and thought I would give it to him to try. The process was simple. He wrote his story, added pictures and we dropped it in the mail in the postage paid envelope (which was great-by the way) that was included in the kit.  IlluStory Book Kit is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

My son actually forgot all about it and about 2 weeks later our mail carrier knocked at our front door with a package addressed to my son. I can't even describe the look on his face when he took out his book. He looked at every detail and couldn't wait to show everyone his masterpiece. He has written several books now and I enjoy seeing his progress unfold. I highly recommend this kit to any parent that has a child even remotely interested in reading or writing. What a value!

Blokus GameBlokus Game $25

I originally bought this game for my classroom to help my students develop thinking skills. When it first arrived, I took the game home to figure out how to play it before introducing it to my students--and I was hooked!

My own children are ages 5 and 12 and they love the game (we are clicking the pic above and buying a game for home), but I teach students up to age 18 and they enjoy the game just as much. Educationally, it helps younger students develop a better understanding of spatial relations and planning ahead. For older students (and adults) it helps to develop various strategy skills.

Unlike most educational games, the rules are simple and once you've played it through one time (or watched it through one time) all your effort can go into plotting your moves. The game doesn't run out of possibilities, either; every game is different, even if you play with the same people over and over.

As an educator, parent, and game enthusiast, this was money well spent. Blokus Game is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

My 5 year old and 12 year old can play with my husband and me and we all are challenged and have a blast! i bought a set to bring to our family vacation home, and my sister in law and i were up until midnight every nite for a week playing this game with whomever we could snag to play it with us!! Even really little kids have fun just playing with the pieces, not actually playing the game. The only caveat I have is DON'T LOSE ANY PIECES!!!!! All of the pieces are critical to the game.. that is a real challenge in our household!!

Our family has played this game nearly every night since receiving it in the mail. The rules of the game are simple and CAN be learned in less than a minute, as advertised. It is a tricky game that requires strategy and forethought, but it is a great challenge and alot of fun. A great choice!

Cranium Giggle Gear Mega Mask Robot Bug Alien $20

I bought this for my nephew for his 5th birthday and he had an absolute blast playing with it!!

The only thing that I had a slight problem with was the mouthpiece. It came loose often and I had to keep adjusting it for my nephew. Cranium Giggle Gear Mega Mask Robot Bug Alien is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Fun wise - he had a blast "tricking" everyone by disguising his voice. I would definitely recommend this for other 5 year olds.

Disney Cars Dirt Track Racing Slot Car Race Set $25

This is a great little set and is fully compatible with standard slot cars from other makers. Also the track uses the standard Mattel/Tyco connectors so you could expand the system if you want (with black track).

You could also use the standard Mattel/Tyco power supply, but be advised that it's a higher voltage so the cars may go shooting off such a small track. Powered Slot Car Race Set is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

One of the nice features of the controller is the ability to limit the travel of the trigger (3 settings), so that young kids don't go full throttle and run the cars off the track constantly
.

LEGO Star Wars TIE Interceptor $20

Well the TIE Interceptor is another of the 06 sets. The TIE Interceptor, if you didn't know, was in Episode 6 and came in great numbers. I was honestly surprised to see this as a set.

The TIE Interceptor comes in the same black and blue as most of Lego's TIE's do. I honestly love the color scheme. It makes the TIE's stand out from the other usual gray/ blue and white ships in my collection. This is, of course, a TIE. Meaning that it suffers from that all too common disease, known as "wobbly-wings". Yes the wings on the Interceptor are as flimsy as most of Lego's ships that have wings. But some modding should do the trick.

Included with this set is the almighty Imperial Pilot. He is of course dressed in a sleek jet black. The helmet is basically a stormie's helmet but with added stuff to it. Lego really likes to change the poor Imperial Pilots' heads though. The most recent TIE Fighter that came out had a pilot with a blank brown face. This pilot has a blank black face. Poor Stormie's and Pilots. Maybe someday Lego will give them faces. Lego Star Wars TIE Interceptor is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Well there you have it. It's basically an average set. I would click the pic above and pick up one though. It's great for making Imperial armies stronger/bigger. I picked up two, but that's just me

Electronic Advanced Mission Battleship $55

In a state of nostalgic glee, I recently clicked the pic above and grabbed this portable one-player LCD game to see how it compared to the original. I found it to be a great diversion during those times when I don't have a human opponent to go up against. Which seems to be quite often nowadays, but let's not get into that; time for me to give this product a proper review. And to do so, I've decided to follow Beardsmen's toy ratings format and break this down into the three big ratings factors...

FUN: Although the entire unit is quite small (about 5" by 3.5"), the game screen is big enough to be able to make out all the action, which is definitely an advantage. I found each of the three different game settings (the traditional alternating shots, one shot for each active ship, keep shooting until you miss) reasonably challenging on level one.

It's levels two and three, however, that REALLY makes these little battles a tough outing for me! If I somehow manage to survive on L3, I usually have only one vessel left, and one shot to go before sinkage! You can also either have the computer choose how you want your vessels arranged with selections you can scroll through, or you can rotate `em and place `em down yourself. Electronic Talking Battleship is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The only thing I miss somewhat when I play this is the sounding out of the grid coordinates and hearing `miss' or `it's a hit!' Y'know, the classic things you hear and say when you're playing the original Battleship with a good friend-or complete stranger for that matter. Instead, all you'll hear here is the beeping of the shot cursor as you select a square to fire upon, as well as the dropping of the bomb and (hopefully) the hit.

Then there's the playing of `Taps' after a defeat, or a victory tune if the opposite outcome transpires. If you wish to keep your little simulated vessel combat scenarios discreet, however, there is a `sound on/off' button. This feature is especially helpful at keeping folks from road-ragin' on you during those long cross-country road trips!

DURABILITY: So long as you don't touch the LCD screen, drop it on the ground too many times, or throw it into a body of water in utter frustration, this handheld game should bring you many a happy year of playing enjoyment. Oh yes, it might help to replace the large button-cell battery every once in a blue moon or so. Fortunately the game has an auto shut-off when left idle for a minute or so, which of course means longer battery life.

EDUCATIONAL VALUE: I find the fun in Battleship to be more diversionary than educational. Well, unless you consider the strategic spacing of your shots to get a better chance of hitting an enemy ship to be a high point of scholastic achievement that is. Otherwise, I don't think electronic Battleship will help you grab top honors in vessel combat tactics & strategy at the naval academy. Class dismissed!

LEGO SpongeBob Build-A-Bob $35

Sneak a peek inside SpongeBob's head! Down in Bikini Bottom, Plankton has somehow squeezed his way into the brain of SpongeBob SquarePants. As Plankton starts flipping levers and turning gears, bubbles shoot from SpongeBob's mouth and his big eyes spin.

Affable SpongeBob, throughout alternating looks of glee and concern, simply goes with the flow. Standing over 11 inches tall, this is a big Bob, complete with trademark red tie, tube socks, and black shoes. Turn SpongeBob around to see what's on his mind--and how to control it, with instrument panels, moving gears, and a working catapult to launch the bubbles.  Lego SpongeBob Build A Bob is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

The colorful diagrams found in the detailed instruction booklet are invaluable in assembling the 445 pieces of this set, which requires the building skills of an older child or adult. As with all Legos, the design is customizable and compatible with other Lego products. Mix and match with other SpongeBob SquarePants Lego sets (sold separately) to create a custom cartoon-inspired seascape.

V. Smile Nitro Notebook Interactive Learning System $50

We were excited to give this to our 5 year old for his birthday. After opening he loved the design and having his own cool looking notebook computer and was very excited.

However the screen is very disappointing. I can't even rate the games because overall I simply just can't see what is on it. The product is relatively useless in a dark environment and disappointing.

I should have gone to a toys r us and actually compared the product to other similar products. I would suggest anyone do the same prior to clicking the pic above and buying it.

DreamLife Interactive TV Plug-In Game $38

I play this game with my daughter, and I am absolutely shocked by how much I enjoy it, especially since I don't like computer games. At first, I played just to be "helpful," but I quickly found it so much fun that now I turn on the game even when my daughter is not playing. DreamLife Interactive TV Plug-In Game is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

A couple hints:

1) To get to a dance, on the evening of the dance, exit your room and move around to the different buildings until you find the dance. Though you don't get to actually see yourself dance, you get to "mingle" and you get friendship points much faster at a party or dance than in the rest of the game.

2) If your wardrobe fills up, sell things in your closet. You need room for the next seasons' clothes anyway.

3) Just before homework or a test is due, "study" two or three times, then the parents will give you money to buy things like radios and computers.

4) Take a job as a news writer and later you will have the opportunity for higher paying jobs like editor.

5) Get crushes by saying that you like a boy when a friend asks. Then you can "dance" with that boy at a dance and get friendship points really quickly.

6) Having clothes in your wardrobe and friends with five stars translates into more points when you start your day. This makes it easier to get the highest points possible for the day since you can focus on lifestyle instead.

I've played this game through to the end once now, and I'm finding that what I enjoy now is different from what I enjoyed early on. At first, I just wanted to accumulate all the pretty dresses. Now I enjoy mixing and matching separates. I've made some pretty cool outfits. And I love getting trophies for various activities.

I'm loving this game. If you find it boring, you might try looking around a little more at all the different things that can be done. This game is really fun!

Mindstorms NXT $250

My NXT set just arrived by FedEx this afternoon. I'm a parent of two (6 and 3-year old) so this is mainly for me for now. I was an early adopter of the first generation of Mindstorms, so naturally I clicked the pic above and  pre-ordered the NXT. I've played with it for two hours, so these are my initial impressions:

- the new motors are Wonderful -- they work as motors or servos (you tell them which angle to go to). They look futuristic and robot-y

- it comes with an ultrasound distance sensor -- whoa that's neat!

- All of the sensors are "slick-looking", and seem to work very well.

- the brick display is quite nice, but the interface is a bit niggly. Lots of nested menus. My 3 year-old managed to delete the built in demo program by button twiddling. It was easy to restore, though.

- the box itself (the "out of box experience") is disappointing. You have to punch out some quarter-circles to allow it to hinge, but they're poorly serrated, so the tears come out ugly. The inner boxes are hard to open so you end up messing those up. In short, the previous Mindstorms box was a great long-term storage solution. This one is going in the trash. As a first impression, it's pretty poor.

- Mindstorms NXT is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, toddler, child and kid reviews.

- back to the good: there's a "quick-start guide" that gets you building a simple robot that is run by a built in demo program. It's perfect: not difficult, but not trivial -- it makes noises and moves around. The kids were enchanted.

- the "powered by LabView" programming environment seems halfway between the nerd-y LabView system that you could buy from Dacta and the totally bozo thing bundled with the old Mindstorms. It doesn't have that "rocket scientist" feel of the old LabView environment, which is both good (it's more self-guided) and bad (I don't see how to zoom out so that I can see complex programs all at once, for example.

All in all, this thing is very impressive, has lots of staying power, and since it supports MacOS X, I'll actually use it, and will most likely pull out my old Mindstorms and combine parts.

Thanks, Lego -- keep up the great work!

Settlers of Catan Board Game $28

This is a game which was originally published in Germany as Die Siedler von Catan, where it has sold several million units and has many expansions and variants available. In fact, I am told that this game is the (worldwide) 3rd best selling game of the last decade. It's really a shame it hasn't quite reached the American mass market.

It's a game about building and trade. Each player builds settlements that can produce some of the 5 resources - Ore, Wheat, Wool, Wood, and Bricks - which can then be used to build roads and more settlements to expand your kingdom or upgrade your settlements to cities to increase their production.

The thing that really makes the game is that there is always a hot commodities market, with players trading resources they don't need in exchange for those that are more useful for their game strategy; each resource is useful in different combinations for building different things.

This is a pretty simple game that even younger kids should be able to handle. Anybody who can play Monopoly can play this game, and believe me, they'll have a much better time with the Settlers of Catan (you can even buy an expansion to handle up to 6 players). The Settlers of Catan is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

A lot of people I know are somewhat daunted by this game because even though it's very straightforward, it's a bit different from your average American game. I speculate that the reason for this is that the Germans have a thriving mass game market, with a number of competing companies, while the US mass board game market is essentially monopolized by a single company, Hasbro.

So while we are busy playing various Monopoly knock-offs, the Germans have benefited from tremendous development. In terms of family entertainment, the rather small amount of effort it will take to embrace the Settlers of Catan will be well spent. And if you like it, it's just the tip of the iceberg. There are literally hundreds of extremely high-quality family games coming out of Germany and Europe these days (although admittedly Settlers of Catan is among the best).

Disney Channel's High School Musical DVD Board Game $20

You need to "Get'cha Head in the Game" because this is based on the hottest kids movie - High School Musical on the Disney Channel. Now everyone can enjoy the smash hit movie in this new DVD game.

It features video clips from the movie, plus original outtakes and all the song and dances as kids compete in four categories: Outtakes, Song, Dance and Relationship.

Be the first one to make your way around the school for the final call back audition. Disney Channel's High School Musical DVD Board Game is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Includes a board game, DVD game and six character movers.

Twister Dance DVD - Milton Bradley Interactive Games $29

Show off your dance moves, and learn some new ones too, with this totally cool DVD game! Simply pop into your DVD player (not included) and take notes as cool animated characters show you how it's done, to totally upbeat music! 40 dance sessions will have you on your feet and dancing to the beat! For 4 players.

This is what you get when you cross a Twister mat with dance lessons, and it's pretty good. The concept is simple: Pop the DVD in the machine, lay out the 2.5-foot square mat in front of the TV, and dance following the onscreen prompts.

In Learn mode, an animated choreographer shows you the moves step by step. The 40 dance lessons start slow and simple and gently add complexity. Dance mode increases the tempo and strings the individual moves into a dance routine.

Finally, a party mode provides and music and lights without the prompting or examples, but you can only get there after completing the other modes. Twister Dance DVD is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

It's an energetic single-player game, and the instructions suggest rules for making it a competitive game. The mats clearly mark out step zones and are close enough to be within easy reach for anyone taller than about 4 feet. Unlike Twister, though, this game makes sure that you're in no close proximity to other players, which is a good thing since all eyes are focused either on the TV or on floor mats while arms and legs flail.

Inside the box you'll find the DVD, instruction booklet, and four non-slip dance mats.

Snap Circuits Jr SC-100 $24

The best point in favor of this product is that it is Lego style toy that does not intimidate a child with intricate electronic components. My 6-1/2 year old daughter started playing with it and was very excited to have completed her first project to light a bulb with a switch.

Theories of electricity followed naturally when initially the bulb did not light up. I showed her the shiny metal strip beneath the connectors and explained conductivity a little. Snap Circuits Jr is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Another major advantage is that there are mostly no wires, and the components are hidden from view, giving it a very un-complicated look that a child can easily comprehend. This difference makes possible for my daughter to actually play with it.

The only problem seems to be the quality of plastic used. It looks as if it might break if a component was bent while snapping in. Still, I highly recommend this product

Here & Now Edition Monopoly Board Game $15

The back of the box poses the question, "What would the Monopoly game be like if it were invented today?" One could sum up most of the difference in one word: inflation. If you're used to playing the traditional game, you might feel a little woozy handling Monopoly money denominations that start at $100k and top out at $5 million.

Players are no longer vying for control of Atlantic city but now the entire U.S., from sea to shining sea. Entry level properties like Baltic and Mediterranean Avenues, which sold for $60 back in the day, have been replaced by Texas Stadium in Dallas and Cleveland's Jacobs Field, each selling for $600,000. The most disturbing piece of property for sale in this game is the White House--one can only assume it's someone's subtle political humor.

Railroads have been replaced by airports like O'Hare and JFK. Utilities have been supplanted by cell phone and Internet service. And, of course, the game pieces have all been updated: laptop, cell phone, hybrid car, commuter coffee mug, jumbo jet, super size fries. Here & Now Edition Monopoly Board Game is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Gameplay, however, is still the same. The idea is to buy properties, build houses and hotels, and charge other players rent when they land on your land. Thankfully, transactions are still handled in cash and not by some convoluted electronic banking scheme.

There's a lot of changes here that will make cynics and traditionalists sour. What's interesting about this edition is that it brings back a kind of jaw-dropping thrill--one that made this game a household word in the middle of the Great Depression, when people dreamt of becoming millionaires. This game will let you dream of becoming a billionaire.

Deluxe Turntable Scrabble $33

Everyone agrees that Scrabble is one of the greatest word games ever invented. That said, I'm only going to review the quality of this particular edition.

First the pros: The tiles seem to be of excellent quality. Complaints about the painted, solid wood tiles of this edition seem unwarranted to me. Also the cloth bag is good quality, and has the Scrabble logo sewn onto it.

The tile trays put me off at first... I thought I'd miss the old wooden trays. The truth is, I like the way these new plastic trays prevent the tiles from sliding off. I also like that the letter frequencies are printed on the trays, although this should have been done at the factory instead of providing stickers that need to be attached. Take extra care when applying these, or else shoddy looking bubbles can form under the stickers.

And of course, the lazy-Susan is still here from the last deluxe edition with an added storage tray that doubles as a sort of booster seat for the game board (i.e., the game board can be low for playing on a table, or about 2 inches off the ground for playing on uneven surfaces). Deluxe Turntable Scrabble is included in the top popular and educational toys for baby, infant, toddler, child and kid reviews.

Now the cons: In big capital letters, The Playing Surface. The playing surface is simply molded cardboard. The featured reviewer who praises how the board has a "plastic grid that conveniently holds letters in place" is referring to the previous incarnation of Scrabble Deluxe. My parents own that version, which is much more durable than this version. Spill one glass of ice tea on this new version and it will be stained for life. This poor design choice is unfortunate, because the game board itself 'looks' better than the older version. Also, the raised ridges on the board are much more subtle than before. Some people may prefer this change, but I do not -- the tiles are not held fast.

All in all, my advice is this: If you're playing this game with all your adult friends, buy this version and keep your drinks away from it. If you're buying this to play with your kids or grandkids either shop around for the previous version, or just buy the ... standard version.

This was and is still my mother's favorite board game. I have fond memories of playing Scrabble with her, even when I was only just learning to read/spell. My crowning moment was having nearly all vowels, and spelling "setae," forcing my overly literate mother to check that the word actually existed. Proof that studying worms in the second grade is always a good idea.

Apples to Apples Game Party Box $24

I was introduced to this game a year ago and fell in love with it. It's great for kids and adults and sure to provide plenty of fun.

Each player has seven red cards in their hand. They have actions or nouns on them. Things like "Charging Rhinos," "James Bond," "Paying Taxes," "Mirror," or "Walt Disney."

Each round has a judge. The judge turns over the top green card, which contains an adjective like creative, handsome, feminine, horrid, scary, etc. Each player then picks the card from their hand they feel best matches the green card and plays i
